Number 1 has called me several times over the last couple of days, which is always good. I miss him. Our conversations are fairly wide-ranging, from sports to politics to the outdoors; there is not much that we do not talk about. However, one topic has come up over and over: his job. He likes where he works. He likes the people who work with him, but there is this small issue: his pay, or more specifically, the pay structure. Number 1 works at a restaurant that has a tip share. What that means, to those who do not work in the service industry, is that, at the end of the day, ALL tips are put into a single pot and distributed ‘proportionally.’ This ‘proportionate’ distribution of tips is beginning to cause discontent with him and several others. You see, no matter how hard they work or how good the service they provide, it doesn’t really impact how much they earn, thereby creating a disincentive for hard work. I mean, why volunteer for the 10-top when a 2-top table will eventually pay just as much? I do believe there is a lesson here, and ol’ Atlas is currently looking for a new job. Oh, and it is alleged that the ‘No Kings’ marching owner takes 20% off the top…allegedly.
