Lunch Box Quotes

Lunch Box Quotes

A lot of introspection this morning. I think the Kelland and Berry quotes are hitting me hard, and it is not like the Scruton quote is light on responsibility. It reminds me of the line from Saving Private Ryan when Tom Hanks’ character is dying, and he says to Pvt. Ryan, “Earn this.” We all have a responsibility to hand off a better world than the one we came into. I just hope that I live up to that responsibility and, after all, ‘when there is no hope, it is incumbent on us to invent it.’

Lunch Box Quotes are notes I typically include in the kids’ lunches every day. Since Number 1 is off in college, he gets a text, and Numbers 2-4 get handwritten notes on napkins. However, Number 3 is skipping lunch now (for some reason), running late, so 3 gets a text; only 4 gets a note.

Quotes:

1. “We do not merely study the past: we inherit it, and inheritance brings with it not the rights of ownership, but the duties of trusteeship. Things fought for and died for should not be idly squandered. For they are the property of others who are not yet born.” – Roger Scruton

2. “It was pride that changed angels to devils. It is humility that makes men as angels.” –  Saint Augustine

3. “The care of the Earth is our most ancient and most worthy, and after all, our most pleasing responsibility.” – Wendell Berry

4. “Where there is no hope, it is incumbent on us to invent it.” –  Albert Camus

Bonus Quote: “My father didn’t tell me how to live. He lived and let me watch him do it.” –  Clarence Budington Kelland
