Daily Dump: Baring Flights, Mineral Wealth, Not Your Grandfathers Resistance, Grey-Zone Coercion, Extinct Species and More – September 29, 2021

A mixed bag as we are all over the place in today’s daily dump. While frustration is not necessarily conveyed in the article I can imagine steam is blowing out someone’s ears somewhere as the U.S. bars flight from landing with Americans from Kabul – activists – Reuters. Staying in Afghanistan, Foreign Policy reports, Afghanistan Is No Treasure Trove for China: The country’s mineral wealth remains largely theoretical. It’s an informative take on the challenges anyone will face in Afghanistan but more importantly, the article prospects around the globe to paint a more complete picture of Rare Earth Metal Mining and is definitely worth your time. The Modern War Institute takes a look at irregular warfare ‘doctrine’ and identifies some issues in Not Your Grandfather’s Resistance: The Unavoidable Truths about Small States’ Best Defense Against Aggression. I don’t think the author truly knows what Special Operations are teaching down range and makes some assumptions here, but it is still helpful in identifying potential deficiencies. Unity of purpose and unity of effort are essential words (they are written on my white board in the office) in a whole of government approach to combating Chinese influence and War on the Rocks is all over it in, The U.S.-Australian Alliance Needs a Strategy to Deter China’s Gray-Zone Coercion. This is probably your must read of the day. And for something different, some sad news as DW reports, US declares 23 species extinct, including ivory-billed woodpecker. Not joking, I was holding onto some hope for the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker. All of this and more in Today’s Daily Dump!
