We could consult the bible of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soc.mil\/ARIS\/books\/arisbooks.html\">Resistance<\/a> from ARIS Studies but we will stick to the headlines. Did you know there was a breakaway province in Moldova? I didn\u2019t but does it matter? Maybe, The Moscow Times Reports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoscowtimes.com\/2022\/02\/01\/russia-stages-drills-in-moldovas-breakaway-transnistria-a76222\">Russia Stages Drills in Moldova\u2019s Breakaway Transnistria<\/a> which puts Russian troops on 3-sides of Ukraine. From the article:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Russia has staged military drills in Transnistria, the pro-Moscow separatist region of Moldova, amid Western fears of military actions in neighboring Ukraine, the Russian Defense Ministry&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/function.mil.ru\/news_page\/country\/more.htm?id=12406347@egNews\">said<\/a> Tuesday\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Transnistria, whose population of 500,000 is one-third ethnically Russian and one-third Moldovan, has sought to join Russia since breaking away from Moldova in 1990.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>A small contingent of around 400 Russian peacekeepers is deployed in a demilitarized zone as part of a 1992 Moldovan-Transnistrian-Russian monitoring commission.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But what about resistance from within Russia? Resistance there is taking two forms: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/taskandpurpose.com\/news\/russia-ukraine-generation-z-instagram-putin\/\">\u2018No war pls\u2019 \u2014 Gen Z is spamming Putin\u2019s Instagram asking him not to start World War III<\/a> \u2013 Task and Purpose <\/em>and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rferl.org\/a\/russia-ukraine-activists-intellectuals-statement\/31681047.html\">Thousands Of Russian Intellectuals, Activists Urge Kremlin To Avoid &#8216;Immoral&#8217; War With Ukraine<\/a> \u2013 Radio Free Europe. <\/em>Maybe not quite a popular uprising but at least an Instagram presence. From Task and Purpose:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>As tensions rise in Europe and the United States prepares to send troops to support Ukraine against Russia, Generation Z has taken on another approach \u2014 simply asking Russian President Vladimir Putin to \u201cplease consider to just not start the war.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Admittedly, this could be our own disinformation campaign, but what about the Russian Intellectuals? From Radio Free Europe:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>More than 2,000 Russian intellectuals, including prominent rights activists, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.svoboda.org\/a\/voinu-s-ukrainoi-nam-ne-prostyat-intelligencia-protiv-partii-voiny\/31679967.html\">have urged<\/a><\/strong> the Kremlin to avoid starting an &#8220;immoral, irresponsible, and criminal&#8221; war against Ukraine amid global concerns that Moscow may be on the verge of launching a wide-scale invasion of its western neighbor.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>A <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/echo.msk.ru\/blog\/echomsk\/2972500-echo\/\">statement<\/a><\/strong> from the Congress of Russian Intellectuals was made public over the weekend as Russia continued its buildup of troops &#8212; now estimated at well over 100,000 &#8212; near the Ukrainian border.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">I don\u2019t think anyone really knows if this will have an effect, if it is, someone will probably end up in jail. For a reportedly effective resistance campaign we go to, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defenseone.com\/ideas\/2022\/01\/how-irish-fishermen-took-russian-fleet-and-won\/361377\/\">How Irish Fishermen Took on the Russian Fleet and Won<\/a> \u2013 Defense One, <\/em>where the <em>\u2018private sector\u2019<\/em> demonstrated resistance to <em>\u2018Russian gray-zone aggression.\u2019 <\/em>From the article:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>When Russia announced its intention to conduct a naval exercise off the coast of Ireland, Irish fishermen came up with a deterrent so surprising and so powerful that the Russian navy moved the exercise\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Murphy said the fishermen would be making a coordinated effort to head off the Russian fleet. \u201cOur boats will be going out to that area on the first of February to go fishing,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/irish-fishermen-plan-disrupt-russia-navy-excercise\/\">told<\/a> Politico on Jan. 25. \u201cWhen one boat needs to return to port, another will head out so there is a continuous presence on the water. If that is in proximity to where the [military] exercise is going, we are expecting that the Russian naval services abide by the anti-collision regulations.\u201d By constantly having their boats in the exercise waters, the fishermen would\u2014peacefully\u2014prevent the Russians from conducting the exercise.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Ukraine is building their resistance also. The AP reports in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-business-europe-world-news-russia-5d04f61f06ff3953b7a4669478c03074\">Bomb shelters, guerrilla war: Building Ukraine\u2019s resistance<\/a>:<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/why-us-sanctions-may-target-individual-russians-explainer-ab56cfef6ab2b6ec3bee7efc8b4b0744\">If Russia invades,<\/a> some of Kharkiv\u2019s 1 million plus people say they stand ready to abandon their civilian lives and wage a guerrilla campaign against <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-europe-russia-media-vladimir-putin-ecba20c81181c028b06109cf8620426a\">one of the world\u2019s greatest military powers<\/a>. They expect many Ukrainians will do the same.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cThis city has to be protected,\u201d said Viktoria Balesina, who teaches table tennis to teenagers and dyes her cropped hair deep purple at the crown. \u201cWe need to do something, not to panic and fall on our knees. We do not want this.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Speaking of defending the city, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.civilaffairsassoc.org\/post\/irregular-learning-for-irregular-warfare-radical-urban-planning-and-its-applications\">Irregular Learning for Irregular Warfare: Radical Urban Planning and its Applications<\/a> \u2013 The Civil Affairs Association <\/em>notes the importance of planned resistance:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>As special operations forces (SOF), the Department of Defense (DOD), and the entire US Government (USG) continue to shift focus to irregular warfare as one of the primary means to deter Chinese and Russian aggression, it has become clear that such strategies will require intimate involvement with the human environment. This human-focused deterrence has been shown to take many forms, from support-to-resistance campaigns currently seen in the Baltics to the capability to conduct unconventional warfare and disrupt competitors\u2019 objectives across the spectrum of conflict.<a href=\"https:\/\/manage.wix.com\/dashboard\/fb9cc97d-daff-4fca-bc96-2d807a0888c6\/blog\/61f31862793167b4a56ea628\/edit#_edn1\">[i]<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/manage.wix.com\/dashboard\/fb9cc97d-daff-4fca-bc96-2d807a0888c6\/blog\/61f31862793167b4a56ea628\/edit#_edn2\">[ii]<\/a>\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>But if irregular warfare experts are to truly understand the nuances of resistance and develop innovative approaches to these types of challenges, then we must broaden our sources of information to include those that some may see as unconventional. Radical planning, born from the field of urban planning, serves as an example of a field of study with notable overlap with network development and engagement aspects of IW.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">If you are a practitioner of Irregular Warfare or a Military Professional, this is your must read of the day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">And with that, our focus turns to Taiwan where Foreign Affairs argues: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreignaffairs.com\/articles\/china\/2022-02-01\/taiwan-cant-wait\">Taiwan Can\u2019t Wait: What America Must Do To Prevent a Successful Chinese Invasion<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>In March 2021, Admiral Philip S. Davidson, then the commander of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, informed Congress that China could invade Taiwan within the next six years. In October, Taiwanese Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng gave an even shorter timeline, asserting that China would be capable of a \u201cfull-scale invasion\u201d by 2025.
