I know that a relatively small segment of the world refers to the area as <em>\u201cThe South China Sea<\/em>\u201d but for this primer on the disputes there\u2026I will not be one of them. What\u2019s in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/vietnam\/southchinasea-name-02072022145513.html\">name<\/a> anyway as calls for changing it are <a href=\"https:\/\/defencesecurityasia.com\/en\/south-china-sea-name\/\">intensifying<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Let\u2019s start this primer with the most dramatic of the recent provocations and the China-Philippines dispute in The West Philippine Sea. &nbsp;The Video:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"China and Philippine ships collide in South China Sea\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ntD5P-uziok?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">And from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cp3d4rz922do\">BBC<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cA new flashpoint has emerged in the ongoing maritime dispute between China and the Philippines, with both countries clashing over yet another spot in the <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">South China Sea<\/span> <\/em>[West Philippine Sea].<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Both China and the Philippines have staked their claims on various islands and zones in the Sea &#8211; their dispute increasingly escalating over the years with more vessel collisions, scuffles, and allegations of armed threats.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>But last week, things came to a head when Beijing and Manila&#8217;s vessels collided near the Sabina Shoal- both accusing the other of ramming them on purpose.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The shoal, claimed by China as Xianbin Jiao and as Escoda Shoal by the Philippines, is located some 75 nautical miles from the Philippines&#8217; west coast and 630 nautical miles from China.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cp3d4rz922do\">continues<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cThere has been a string of dangerous encounters in recent months as the two sides sought to enforce their claims on disputed reefs and outcrops, including the Second Thomas Shoal and the Scarborough Shoal\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>China has increasingly blasted powerful water cannon and lasers at Philippine ships, with the Filipinos also accusing the Chinese of boarding their boats, leading to scuffles, as well as confiscating items and puncturing their inflatable vessels.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>One of the latest accusations from Manila was that Chinese coast guard personnel armed with knives, spears and swords boarded one of their military ships and threatened their soldiers.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This all stems from the disputed claims due to China\u2019s self-proclaimed 9-dash line. What is the 9-dash line? For that let\u2019s go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/navalinstitute.com.au\/the-origins-of-the-9-dash-line\/\">Australian Naval Institute<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cThe present-day claim by the People\u2019s Republic of China (PRC) to the <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">South China Sea<\/span> <\/em>[West Philippine Sea] <em>is based on an eleven-dash line map produced by a government department in the Republic of China around 1947-48. This technique is being applied to all of the claimants in the area but this is a really good video.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">And, perhaps my favorite map that best illustrates all of the competing interests in the West Philippine Sea. It lays down a comprehensive regime of law and order in the world&#8217;s oceans and seas establishing rules governing all uses of the oceans and their resources. It embodies in one instrument traditional rules for the uses of the oceans and at the same time introduces new legal concepts and regimes and addresses new concerns. It didn\u2019t give details but alluded to the South China Sea row in its statement.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The Philippine Daily Inquirer had published a diplomatic note in which Beijing reportedly demanded that Malaysia immediately halt all activities in an oil-rich maritime area off Sarawak state on Borneo island.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Vietnam:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Politics\/International-relations\/South-China-Sea\/Philippines-and-Vietnam-plan-to-seal-defense-MOU-this-year\">Philippines and Vietnam plan to seal defense MOU this year<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">With a little bit of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/interactive\/2024\/vietnam-south-china-sea-islands-growth\/\">island building of their own<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">And a video explainer of the new Vietnam-Philippine cooperation:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Vietnam and Philippines THREATEN China: &quot;YOU WANT WAR?!&quot;\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mDiKvse_NdQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Indonesia :<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">While not exactly recent, Indonesia is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fpri.org\/article\/2024\/07\/indonesias-new-military-bases-in-the-south-china-sea-preparing-for-friction\/\">building bases<\/a> in the North Natuna Sea also.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Brunei:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Brunei has, for the most part, remained<a href=\"https:\/\/pacforum.org\/publications\/yl-blog-60-caught-in-the-middle-the-measured-voice-of-bruneis-foreign-policy-amidst-the-south-china-sea-disputes\/\"> silent<\/a> in this dispute.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Japan:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">While not in the Indochina Sea, let\u2019s not forget Japan (I really didn\u2019t need to include this one but I love the map and the perspective of this X post.
