As the US \u2013 UK \u2013 Australia submarine agreement continues to roil allies, it is important to take a closer look at what the AUKUS really is. For that we will begin with The Economist\u2019s: The strategic reverberations of the AUKUS deal will be big and lasting<\/a>. The newly announced partnership signals that the shift to focus on China and the Great Power Competition is real and will be lasting. If you have any doubts about the Pacific commitment, read the Asia Times, US encircling China on multiple new Cold War fronts<\/a> which details new technology deals with India and the strategic tie up of the Quad \u2013 US, India, Japan and Australia. Foreign Policy also takes a look at the new strategic agreement in The AUKUS Dominoes Are Just Starting to Fall<\/a> and they note, among other things, the nuclear angle to this agreement. There is no doubt that this is important. Although the Foreign Affairs article, Save the Environment, Save American Democracy<\/a>, does not explicitly say it, I believe a strong environmental policy could also be used to combat China. The article focuses on carbon but there are so many issues that I think the US could unify on, do some good work and combat China at the same time; think illegal fishing, clear economic zones in the Pacific, how carbon limits would hurt the Chinese economy where we would be more able to absorb the changes. There are so many avenues where a strong environmental policy could be used in the power competition with China.  To wrap things up, we will go to the NSI Speaker Series presentation by The New York Times\u2019, Paul Krugman: Did Globalization Go Too Far?<\/a> While I don\u2019t necessarily agree with some of his conclusions, the discussion is very good at framing the importance of self-sufficiently in critical aspects.
