China dominates as Taiwan comes squarely in focus but first we go to The Modern War Institute with an Afghanistan Postmortem in: How Not to Build a State<\/a>. There is so much here that you really need to read the whole thing. The article ultimately concludes, \u201cThe experience of the last two decades should warn us of the dangers of American hubris and the limits of American military power to transform states and societies. The pivot from counterterrorism to liberal state building set the stage for failure, and subsequent decisions and a lack of preparation made the mission even harder than it had to be.\u201d<\/em> It\u2019s almost like we didn\u2019t read our own publications (The Day After Overthrow<\/a> \u2013 ARIS Studies). Speaking of the day after the overthrow, The Economist tackles that in: Pakistan got its way in Afghanistan. Now what?<\/a><\/p>\n

With this in mind, Foreign Policy asks the question, Why is China Sending So Many Warplanes Near Taiwan?<\/a> There is no question that some consider this a provocation, but it is important to read beyond headlines as the article contains a key definition of Taiwan\u2019s air defense identification zone (ADIZ). They state, \u201cTaiwan\u2019s ADIZ, which extends more than 200 miles into mainland China at its northwest point, is just one of many overlapping national air zones<\/a> in the East China Sea.\u201d<\/em> The article asks other questions, but this definition should be considered when reading headlines over the next few days.
