On the drive to drop Number 3 off at school the other day, we were talking about the recent (potential) lab leak of the plague and the possibility of a new pandemic starting in Russia, and it just so happened that one of my favorite podcasts released an episode about that very topic! The podcast is quite good, and I recommend listening to the whole thing, but a single line really caught my attention. (I don’t want to give away the plot, but they do not see a new pandemic on the horizon.)
Here is the show description:
A young researcher in Siberia has died under mysterious circumstances, raising questions about a potential lab leak. Russia won’t say how it happened. Marshall Billingslea, former Special Presidential Envoy for Arms Control, says Moscow has scrubbed news reports, had officials walk back talk of an outbreak, and kept the World Health Organization in the dark. He joins School of War to fill in what the Kremlin won’t, taking us inside Russia’s expanding bioweapons program and the institute at the heart of the mystery, which defectors say ran a covert effort to weaponize the disease and make it resistant to antibiotics. He also explains how Moscow thinks about using these weapons, how China is building a program of its own, and why the most frightening of them pose a risk even nuclear weapons don’t.
At about the 6-minute mark, this statement really caught my ear (emphasis mine):
“At its peak, the Soviet Union, Russia inherited the program from, the Soviet Union had about 60,000 people working in the BW, in the warfare program, across 40 different locations, more than 40 actually, scattered all over the Soviet Union. They were both researching, developing and then weaponizing. We’re talking here about tons and tons, literally tons of different kinds of weapons.
It ranges from infectious diseases, such as the plague, hemorrhagic fevers, like the Marburg virus and the Ebola virus, smallpox. They have developed and weaponized toxins and other poisonous substances, venoms, you name it. If it can be lethal to a human being, they’ve even developed biological weapons that are focused on destroying crops, agricultural weapons.”
Honestly, this was supposed to be yesterday’s article, but I just couldn’t motivate myself to do it. I had about 12 tabs on agroterrorism open on my computer, but just couldn’t do it; then I saw this tweet:
